Between the crackles of vinyl and the rummaging of vintage cassette tapes, Kohla crafts a timeless yet futuristic take on classic soul. Turning to legendary 60s artists for initial inspiration, such as Sam Cooke and Etta James, she polishes her cinematic production with influence from contemporary house-hold names such as Frank Ocean, Lana Del Rey and FKA twigs. Co-produced by Dave Lloyd of Stillhound, her stories are coloured through a fuse of digital and analogue, illustrating her sepiatinged memories.
Kohla’s most recent single ‘_gorgeous’ was playlisted on the BBC Radio 1 Introducing Hot List and was awarded one of the Best Songs of the Year by The Herald Newspaper. A fine art graduate of The Edinburgh College of Art, her upcoming interdisciplinary project (to be released in 2023) is supported by Creative Scotland and Help Musicians.
Every single from the EP received airplay on BBC Radio Scotland, BBC Introducing, BBC Rapal and Amazing Radio, among other stations worldwide, along with enthusiastic global press from music critics in The Skinny (UK), The List (UK), Obscure Sound (New York), Stereofox (Germany), Acid Stag (Australia), Stoney Roads (Australia), Discover Nu (UK), Wonky Sensitive (US) and Eonity (France).
In December 2022 Kohla headlined a sold-out Sofar Sounds show, and pre pandemic in December 2019, she performed her ‘Visual Debut’ showcase at Edinburgh’s Sneaky Pete’s, including backing dancers and a full backing band. The show sold out 6 weeks in advance and was very well received. The Skinny
promoted the live debut show with a full page feature in December 2019.
In November 2020 Kohla was nominated for Best Newcomer at the 2020 Scottish Alternative Music Awards.
